|
The10th Annual NIH SBIR Conference, held in Atlanta, GA 22 & 23 July, was well attended and organized. There were probably about 450 attendees, including federal personnel in a beautiful space seemingly custom designed for the event. As is typical, NIH allowed only a very few vendor display spaces in the meeting areas and only for sponsors who had funded some event (lunch, reception, etc.). But, the past SBIR winners were relegated to a poster session (about 50 posters), in another building far away from the meetings, and this available only during an extended lunch period on the first day (might have been available in prior night's recepton, but we missed that). Many good sesions were offered including a really interesting Live Business Presentation and Critique by panel of three VCs ina mock (???) application for VC capital; and another on Commercializing Healthcare/IT/Media products. Much of the conference was commercialization oriented -- we were very gratified to see that clear direction evolving at NIH.
One negative thing noted, however, was the nearly complete lack of SBIR/STTR consultants in attendance (seems we were the only ones). With these programs in such rapid transition, we fail to understand how anyone can pretend to be an expert without attending such functions REGULARLY -- especially if they presume to bill themselves as "consultants" willing to accept money in exchange for knowledge. It just boggles the mind. |

The 2008 Spring Conference was held from 26 to 30 May in Orlando, FL. This event brought together SBIR Program Managers from all 11 agencies, investors, intellectual property experts and a number of SBIR support providers -- like us (only not really like us since we make the investment to go to all of these and only we offer innovative, low cost tools to help our clients WIN awards). There were only about 300 folks there with ~100 beign us SBIR groupies (always there). However, I must give loud kudos to the FL SBDC folks who pulled this thing off (they were not sure if an when it even going to happen until late March). The venue was good, the food was really good and most of the talks were information rich. There was only a small # of firms with tables/booths in the trade show (we missed that). The only important thing was really lacking was qualified people looking for SBIR's. Still, given the severe handicap of the promoters, and having to put this on over Memorial Day, it was a pretty decent show. |

The 9th Annual NIH SBIR conference was held in Las Vegas NV on Feb. 26 & 27, with about 300 attendees. This one was a full two-day event whereas these have been only 1-day events for the past several years. Therefore, it included some interesting content, such as Grants.Gov submission labs, outside organization presentations, etc., such as we have not seen before (we have attended all nine of these and, for some reason, were the only national level SBIR consultants in attendance at this one). All in all, it was a better conference than any held in the last three years, but still does not approach the quality and value provided when these were presented on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. |
